Soon to Watch: Mirror of the Witch [K-DRAMA]

Written in May

The last time I wrote about dramas, I said I was going to change the format in which I talk about the those I look forward to each month. Which is why I’ve decided to just give basic information about each of the dramas I’ll be watching, instead of writing a curated blog post about them. This way, I can focus on talking about dramas and the reasons why I’ve decided to watch each and every one of them. I’ve done it a couple of times on Kdrama Amino and really enjoyed it. I hope everything goes well here on the blog.

The first drama I’ll be writing about using this new format is titled Mirror of the Witch. While looking for news on Facebook, I read about how Yoon Shi Yoon would be doing a drama alongside Kim Sae Ron. I was really excited to see that he’d chosen to come out in a drama right after concluding his military service. And since I’ve enjoyed many of his dramas, I decided to watch this one as well to see more of his acting. Also, Kim Sae Ron is one of my favorite young actresses, and she has so much potential and talent that I want to continue to support her dramas. Not to mention, I’ve never seen a drama with a similar story as the main female character. All that, including the fantasy aspect of this drama, was enough to seal the deal. Here’s some information about it:

Native Title: 마녀보감
Genre: Horror, fantasy, historical, romance, drama
Episodes: 20
Broadcast network: JTBC
Broadcast period: 2016-May-13 to 2016-Jul-16

This drama is centered around Princess Seo Ri, a girl abandoned and left for dead as an infant. Why did this happen to her? Well, it all started when her mother, Queen Sim (Jang Hee Jin), visited the shaman named Hong Joo (Yum Jung Ah) to ask for help since she had found herself unable to conceive. With the help of the shaman’s dark magic, the queen was able to give birth to twins; a boy named Soon Hwae (Yeo Hoi Hyun) and a girl named Seo Ri (Kim Sae Ron). Soon after being born, Seo Ri is discovered to be cursed and thus is abandoned by her mother and left to die. Luckily, Seo Ri was rescued by the father of a so-called Poong Yeon (Kwak Si Yang) and they become friends throughout her years of growing up in hiding. Seo Ri grows up as a witch dedicated to finding a way to lift the evil curse she was born with. Everything will change the day Seo Ri meets the royal physician named Heo Jun(Yoon Shi Yoon).

This drama is actually inspired by a book published during the Joseon Dynasty titled Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Dongui Bogam). It was written by the royal physician, named Heo Jun, and is considered a very important source of information to those who study Korean traditional medicine.

After reading the synopsis and who would start in it, there was something that made me a bit uncomfortable. Which was the fact that she is underage and will play his love interest in the drama. She’s still a kid you know. But I hope they deal with that aspect in an appropriate and respectful way. I can’t wait to see how this story plays out and how they both act together. I just love historical dramas with a mix of fantasy.

Does anyone else have this drama on the list? Tell me the reasons why you’ve all decided to watch it. 🙂
